valerie — “PLAYING TRICKS”
If you know me, you know I love a good dark, brooding track. That is exactly what valerie is serving up with her latest release, "Playing Tricks." It is a cut from her latest album, MIND GAMES—which I have not had a chance to fully dive into just yet, but it is for sure on my weekend agenda.
The track's heavy, shadowed tone is matched perfectly by her ambient, ethereal vocals as she sings about isolation, social anxiety, and insecurities that accompany toxic relationships—themes that feel incredibly relatable in today's social climate.
Underneath those haunting vocals lives a brilliant, Drum and Bass-inspired production. The sub-bass sinks straight into your chest while dark, sweeping synths paint a massive wall of sound. The clever use of reverb gives the entire arrangement air and space, transforming the track into an almost hypnotic experience.
I definitely have this one heavy in my rotation right now. It is the absolute perfect soundtrack for those lonely LA nights.
