Afro D — “From the Future”
Afro D recently put us on to From the Future, his project with producer Gaige B that dropped last year. These two are no strangers to our Beats Freaks Geeks showcases, so even though this one isn’t a new release, we were more than happy to dive in.
From the Future is a concept album that finds Afro D playing the role of an MC traveling back in time to discover the origins of hip-hop. It’s a dope concept, and he really leans into it. The wordplay is sharp, the bars are there, and Gaige B brings that classic boom-bap production that fits the story perfectly.
There’s a real throwback feel throughout the project. It reminds you of a time when you really sat with the lyrics, caught the references, and ran a track back just to catch a bar you might have missed. That approach feels refreshing, especially with Afro D using the concept to show his love and respect for the culture.
We’re definitely looking forward to what he has coming next, with a second album already on the way. In the meantime, check out his Captain’s Log mixtape series, where he links with different producers and continues to bring that grade-A lyricism.
