DateNite, You’ve been part of the BFG family for years — let’s get our readers caught up. Tell us a little about who you are.
I'm DateNite — a producer, DJ, and classically trained multi-instrumentalist. I like to blend dance music, electronica, and beats, drawing inspiration from driving rhythms, melodic synths, and spatial textures. Originally from Philadelphia, I'm now a regular performer in the LA scene, where I mix hardware, software, and voice in my live sets. You can also catch me DJ'ing around the city with various local collectives.
What inspired you to start creating music, and how has your journey evolved since you began?
I started creating music as DateNite making electronica and singing, I quickly moved into the beat scene and started DJing and creating electronic club music for a long time. Recently I've been moving back to singing and incorporating organic elements and live instruments into my music and performance.
How would you describe your sound and style to someone who has never heard your music before?
Atmospheric dance music blending techno and breaks.
What’s your creative process like when producing a track or writing music? Do you have any unique rituals or habits?
Clean space, clear mind.
Who are your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your sound or approach to production?
I love all types of music and find inspiration in different genres. Recent/constant influences have been : Four Tet, Nosaj Thing, Yaeji, Machinedrum, Jessy Lanza, Grizzly Bear, Kelly Lee Owens, Spirit of the Beehive, A.G. Cook.
What challenges have you faced as an independent artist, and how have you overcome them?
Being an independently artist while balancing rent, maintaining a day job, and being creative has always been a challenge. It sometimes feels like being a two people, the creative expressive form and the surviving contained energy to get by.
What’s been the most memorable moment in your music career so far?
I've been grateful to have a lot of great moments in my music career so far, a favorite for sure would be opening at the Lodge Room for one of my favorite acts, Clark. I did a hybrid DJ/hardware set. Mixing my own songs performed live, with all my favorite artists. It was a magic night for sure.
What can fans expect from you in the near future, and how can they best support your work?
I'm releasing music in September, an EP/ or LP. They can best support my work by staying in contact, listening, and expressing with me! I hope to connect with fans on a more personal level moving forward.
Alright, last one—what’s your go-to, all-time favorite sci-fi flick? We gotta keep the BFG tradition alive!
Tron/Tron Legacy and Blade Runner
Great choices — those are two of our favorites as well! Thanks for sitting down with us, DateNite. We can’t wait to hear what’s next and see you back on a BFG stage soon.
