We're Rooting For You: Duality

What’s up, fellow creatives—
I was recently having a conversation with a friend about the challenges we face today, especially when it comes to wearing so many different hats. In particular, the balance between being an artist and building a brand or business. It’s something all of us have been forced to adapt to in the social media age.
I remember a time when talent and hustle were enough. If you were a dope DJ, you got booked. If your beats were crazy and you submitted demos to the right people, that could be your break. But now, talent alone isn’t enough.
Today, we’re all navigating the duality of being both the creative and the brand behind the creative. That means taking on roles we never really signed up for. We’re not just DJs, producers, and artists anymore—we’re also web designers, social media managers, video editors, copywriters… the list goes on.
And I don’t know about you, but I feel that split.
There are days I’ll sit down to make something—open up a session, start building an idea—and then I remember I have content to post, emails to respond to, or something on the BFG site that needs updating. Next thing you know, the creative energy is gone, and I’m deep in admin mode. Then when I finally try to circle back to creating, it’s like the moment passed.
On the flip side, when I’m locked in creatively, the business tasks feel impossible to focus on. It literally feels like a switchboard in my brain flipping back and forth. That constant switching can be draining.
Honestly, it’s one of the reasons I haven’t been putting out as many of my own projects. I pour 100% of myself into Beats Freaks Geeks because I truly believe in what we’re building—for the community, for creatives like you. The vision is to create something that can eventually take a bit of that weight off your shoulders.
But the reality is, in today’s landscape, we’re all expected to wear all the hats. There’s no clean separation anymore, and balance doesn’t always come easy.
That’s also where I see one of the biggest benefits of AI. When used as a tool, it can help lighten the load—especially for the tasks that don’t necessarily align with what you love doing. Whether it’s helping with captions, ideas, or small admin tasks, it can free up more space for you to stay in your creative pocket a little longer. It won’t replace your creativity, but it can support your workflow.
I’m still figuring out my own rhythm with all of this. Some days are better than others. But one thing I’m learning is that it’s okay if everything doesn’t get done at once. Protecting your creative time matters just as much as handling your business.
If any of this resonates with you, just know you’re not alone. This creative life comes with its duality, and we’re all figuring it out in real time.
Keep creating, even if it’s not perfect. Don’t let the business side kill the reason you started.
And most importantly—
We’re rooting for you.
